Really enjoying some light post processing for a more vintage feel

Head on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 11:47 PMRecently I took an interest in some cinematic and photographic post-processing techniques inspired by several photographers and film makers I've been following. I've tried to gain a little more small-range contrast and a slight antiquing of the colors, not too much to be cheesy, just enough to get across what I was thinking. Its hard to judge against the original photo, the differences are subtle unless side by side. Going for a bit more crunchy look in some of these.

While modernists of the various aesthetic 'isms' attempted to create meaning in confusion, beauty where there was only destruction and chaos, they failed. Pollack, Rothko, and the various priests of 'enlightened art' formed meaninglessness with a high label, emptiness with a lofty explanation. They laughed at beauty, found pleasure in destruction. They lacked wisdom, they lacked understanding. They rejected the essential characteristic of creativity - the power to hold all things together or the will to reflect the wonders of the One who does. God's wisdom is evident and declared in His works even in apparent disorder because it is in fact not chaos at all, but rich complexity. Rich, not empty.

These are the "lightning bolt trees" seen from a different angle and through the opaque IR filter. The beauty of infrared, I believe, is the drama.

I found this Douglas DC-6B front end rotting near the old air terminal at Hobby Airport, Houston. This is to become part of the Air Terminal Museum. The camera is a little nifty toy-like thing, the Ansco Panda. Its a fake TLR with a waist-level viewfinder and virtually no settings. Its lens has an acceptably center for cheap cameras of the day, but softens ever so slightly around the extreme edges. Surprisingly good snapshots come from the Panda, and its attractive looks, simplicity and cheap price have made it popular with a small handful of collectors.

Spring is springing at Hall's Marsh. Hurricane Ike's damage will soon be hidden by lush green. I took the RB67 out to see how its 90mm lens would frame up my favorite wilds. I enjoy a good snarled mess of wilderness.
